What is a Nuttall oak seedling?

Nuttall oak (Quercus texana, also known as Quercus nuttallii) is a native bottomland oak that ranks among the fastest-growing and most dependable mast producers in the South. It’s a favorite on wildlife properties because acorn crops rarely fail, and because its acorns hang on into December and January, when many other food sources have already run out.

This listing is our 12’–18′ size class, well past the small-whip stage. A tree this size already has several years of growth behind it, giving it a real head start toward filling out its canopy on the way to bearing acorns. We grow a limited number each season, and this tree is available for farm pickup only.

Why growers choose this 12’–18′ Nuttall oak

  • Available for farm pickup only at EBB Farms in Western Kentucky. We grow a limited quantity each season, so call 678.234.4894 to check current availability before you plan your trip.

  • Every order includes a free Tree Planting Guide download from the United Chestnuts Academy.

  • Skips years of early establishment — this size gives you a real head start on canopy growth compared to a small starter whip.

  • One of the fastest-growing oaks available, commonly adding 2 to 4 feet of height a year under good conditions.

  • Thrives in heavy, poorly drained clay and wet bottomland where many other trees struggle, while also tolerating moderate drought once established.

  • A dependable, heavy mast producer — acorn crops rarely fail, and yields are considered among the best of any bottomland oak.

  • Holds its acorns into December and January, filling a critical late-season food gap for deer, turkey, and squirrels after other mast is gone.

  • A true native species, so it carries none of the non-native spread concerns that come with some other fast-growing wildlife oaks.

  • Pick up in person and hand-select your tree, with no shipping stress on the root system.

Seedling grade and size

We grow each Nuttall oak seedling in fabric grow bags at EBB Farms. Every tree in this listing stands 12 to 18 feet tall. When a root reaches the breathable bag wall, it air-prunes. This natural process stops the root tip and signals the plant to send out new lateral roots behind it.

Instead of one root circling endlessly, like it would in a solid plastic pot, you get dozens of fine, branching feeder roots throughout the container. As a result, the tree transitions smoothly from nursery to field and establishes quickly, even at this larger size.

Planting ideas for your property

  • Set along the back edge of a late-season food plot or a favorite deer trail, since Nuttall’s acorns hang on well after most other oaks have dropped.

  • Plant in wet, low-lying, or heavy-clay ground where sawtooth and other upland oaks won’t thrive.

  • Use in green-tree reservoir or duck-hole plantings; flooded bottomland acorns are a well-known draw for wood ducks and other waterfowl.

  • Pair with earlier-bearing species like sawtooth oak or chestnut so your property has mast dropping across a longer season, right into winter.

Basic planting and care

  • Nuttall oak prefers full sun and heavy, wet-to-moist clay or loam soils, but it also tolerates moderate drought once it’s established.

  • Give the tree consistent moisture through its first year at a new site, especially if it’s not planted in naturally wet ground.

  • Bring a truck bed or trailer sized for a 12’–18′ tree, and expect a larger planting hole than a small whip needs.

  • Control grass and weed competition around the tree for the first 2 to 3 years, because even an established tree needs some help while it settles in.

  • Protect the tree with a tube or cage where deer pressure is heavy. Browsing and antler rubbing are the most common causes of damage at this size.

  • Plant more than one tree in an area. Nuttall oak relies on wind for pollination, so a small grove sets a heavier, more reliable acorn crop than an isolated single tree.

  • Be patient with mast production. Like other red oaks, Nuttall’s acorns take two growing seasons to mature, and trees typically need 20 to 25 years to produce their first good seed crops, so plan on it as a long-term addition rather than a quick win — even a tree this size hasn’t skipped that timeline, just gotten a head start on it.
