What’s Next for Chestnut Growers of America? A Conversation with Roger Blackwell

Roger Blackwell Joins Melanie Jones on Branching Out: Growing Together podcast

A Full-Circle Moment

There’s something powerful about coming full circle. Roger Blackwell was one of the very first guests on Branching Out: Growing Together nearly three years ago. So much has changed in the chestnut industry since then that it felt like the perfect time to reconnect.

When we met at the Chestnut Growers of America and Northern Nut Growers Association conference in Lansing, Michigan this summer, the energy in the room was contagious. Growers, researchers, and co-op members filled every corner with conversation. You could feel the momentum—this sense that we’re not just growing trees anymore; we’re building an industry.

And for me personally, this episode marked a big shift. It was my last day in my corporate career, and my first official step into a new chapter—one rooted in the chestnut community I love.

The Heart of CGA

When I asked Roger what progress makes him most proud over the last 15 years, his answer came easily: “The people.”

He talked about how inspiring it is to see more growers showing up each year—farmers with trees in the ground, farmers just getting started, and others dreaming about what’s possible. “Watching them produce, watching them grow… it’s just amazing to see”.

Roger’s leadership has always focused on connection. From early co-op efforts to expanding research, he’s seen firsthand how knowledge-sharing can turn small orchards into sustainable businesses. “There’s such a sense of collaboration now,” he said. “Everyone wants to learn and help each other.”

Looking Ahead

Roger recently transitioned from President to Vice President of Chestnut Growers, Inc., but his passion for the broader CGA mission hasn’t slowed a bit. He sees the next few years as pivotal—where stronger communication, education, and marketing will shape the future of chestnuts in the U.S.

He’s encouraged by new board members, energized by partnerships across states, and deeply hopeful about how chestnuts are finding their place in American agriculture. “It’s not just about growing nuts anymore,” he said. “It’s about growing opportunity.”

A Season of Growth

As we wrapped up, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of this moment—for Roger, for CGA, and for the broader movement. The industry has matured, but it’s still got that scrappy, can-do spirit that brought us all here.

This conversation reminded me why I do this work: because every grower, from the first seedling to the established orchard, plays a part in building something bigger than ourselves.

So here’s to Roger, to CGA, and to everyone out there planting roots for the next generation.
