Michael Parks – Chestnut Farmer Shares His Story on Branching Out: Growing Together Podcast
Melanie and Michael Parks engaged in a thoughtful discussion about their podcasting journey, contrasting low-tech and high-tech approaches. Michael expressed his comfort with low-tech methods, reminiscing about a time when information was primarily sourced from libraries, and they discussed the advancements of technology, acknowledging the rapid societal changes that have occurred. Both recognized the advantages of audio content in fostering community while also appreciating modern technology’s benefits to their endeavors, particularly in the chestnut industry.
Michael shared his journey in chestnut farming, beginning with a childhood encounter in 1973 that inspired him to plant chestnut trees on a cow pasture he purchased. His initial lack of a business plan evolved as he discovered a market for his chestnuts, leading him to experiment with grafting techniques to enhance quality. He focused on the Eaton variety for its flavor and early harvest, later incorporating the Qing variety for a consistent supply.

The conversation highlighted the challenges he faces in educating grocery store managers about chestnuts and the importance of consumer education, especially within ethnic communities that traditionally consume the product. Both speakers expressed concerns about the potential commodification of chestnuts while acknowledging the dedication required to maintain successful orchards.
The discussion also touched on themes of sustainability and the balance between passion and profit in their work. Michael shared his innovative irrigation practices and waste management strategies, emphasizing the importance of a clean orchard environment. Melanie and Michael agreed on the value of sustainable agricultural practices as more people seek to reconnect with nature.
They also explored the role of technology in enhancing understanding of the natural world, referencing tools like the Merlin app for bird identification. The meeting concluded with a focus on collaboration, as both emphasized the importance of strong partnerships in their personal and professional lives, while remaining optimistic about their future ventures in the chestnut industry.
Michael stated that one important element in having a small chestnut farm is a good partner (wife, in his case) to share the workload, planning, and enjoyment!
